Ten Snapshots of Siargao by Aziza Mondoñedo

posted by in The Ten

As part of our continuing Easter Break Getaways, we are featuring the very fun, game and talented jewelry designer Aziza Mondoñedo. She and her family spent their holiday in Siargao, where her maternal grandfather hails from and where Aziza has been spending summers and holidays since the late 90s. “Siargao is a place where unspoiled beaches and clear blue waters still exist. For me, it is literally an escape to paradise,” she says.

Three favorite things about the trip.

1) Island time. You get to do what you want, whenever you want to. Unless you make your own, there is no schedule! From playing beach volleyball, to swimming in the sea to eating fresh buko (young coconut) to catching up on the Oscar nominated movies.

2) Fresh seafood. As soon as it’s caught, it goes straight on the grill – or your plate!

3) Getting to spend wholesome quality time with my family. We are rarely complete and this is the best place for all of us to catch up yet we still have our own space whenever we want it.

“I’m definitely going back!” says Aziza. “For my next trip, because I rarely cook seafood, I plan to experiment with more seafood recipes, hopefully get to see the waterfalls in that area and (fingers crossed) I’ll finally have my diver’s certificate and will be able to explore what’s under the sea over there.”

We are two friends who were former magazine editors. Having moved onto other things, we both realized that the creative flow the publishing world used to offer us was missing from our lives. Armed with a common love of travel to the exotic and familiar, a penchant for the bohemian, an obsession with food and a lust for writing, we decided to collaborate our unique and fashionable journeys through life together in one passion project.
